Wanderers is an iconic club having been the permanent host for 23 years of what used to be SA’s premier tournament, the Lexington PGA Championship. This annual showcase from 1972 to 1995 drew large galleries to follow world stars. Winners included five major champions – Gary Player, Ernie Els, Tom Weiskopf, Hale Irwin and Corey Pavin. Many leading South Africans have their names on the trophy: Dale Hayes three times (1974-76), Hugh Baiocchi, John Bland, Bobby Cole, Fulton Allem, Tony Johnstone, Mark McNulty and David Frost. The PGA had such status that the winner was invited to the World Series of Golf on the PGA Tour. Today the Wanderers remains one of Gauteng’s most beautiful parkland courses, its undulating fairways lined with majestic rows of distinctive mature trees. By modern standards it’s a shortish course, yet tight off the tee. A new dam has been built at the par-3 sixth. The course opened with 10 holes in 1939, designed by Bob Grimsdell and club member Felix Oliver, with 18 completed a few years later. Wanderers is one of a few courses where the starting hole on each nine, 1 and 10, is a par 5.
The Wanderers Golf Club is nestled in the heart of Johannesb...urg’s northern suburbs and alongside the world-famous Wanderers Cricket Stadium. The Wanderers Golf Club is well established having opened for play in 1939. As a result, the fairways are lined with magnificent large trees which define the course’s parkland character. In 2023 The Wanderers Golf Club had an upgrade to its irrigation system including the construction of a new dam on the 6th Hole. This new dam, besides providing much needed water adds an extra level of visual intimidation to the tee shot on the short Par 3 6th.As a result of the new irrigation The Wanderers Golf Club is always in superb condition during the warmer months and only once the winter frost sets in does it become a much firmer, more testing golf course. The firm winter conditions at The Wanderers Golf Club have caught many unsuspecting golfers off guard due to the sloping ground on certain holes allowing even well struck shots to roll off the fairway. The greens at The Wanderers Golf Club are always in exceptional condition and a pleasure to putt on. However, caution should also be practised during winter when the subtle slopes on some greens and large tiers on others can lead to some testing putts.Despite its excellent condition, convenient location and tranquil atmosphere, The Wanderers Golf Club is one of the most reasonably priced Golf Courses in Johannesburg.
