Another gem in the centre of Cape Town. Now over 100 years old, this parkland golf course has withstood the test of time. 10 minutes outside the City Centre and right next to Pinelands suburb in the southern suburbs of the Mother City, the ex-Mowbray GC (now merged with King David GC) provides an intelligent golf course that is not always a big hitters paradise. Voted in the top 100 in SA a few years back and in 2010 as one of the friendliest courses to play, this ex PGA and SA Open venue needs some love to get back to its glory days.
The fairways that need shot making to play and they were cleverly designed to run either with or against the predominant quartering winds will test your skills. You need accuracy before the ‘big stick’ comes out. Be warned!!
Paspalum greens greet you and if you have not played in Natal, up the west coast at Langerbaan or on island courses worldwide, this might seem strange as in wet winter they are brown but in summer they need very little water and are ‘ever-green’ but grow vigorously. The talk is that these are being over-seeded and in a few years will produce a different surface. Not the longest course, KDMGC will give you everything that you wish for with water hazards ready to catch your stray shots, but large enough greens to reward you straight play.
One of my favourites to play, I look forward to seeing how the new management will take this great old course and get it back to some form of its previous glory. The club house is tired, locker rooms, pro shop, golf carts and general appearance needs money and attention. However again rumour says that this is about to be done. Nice.
I look forward to seeing these changes when next I go play with my PMG membership.
