Water, water everywhere, and lots of rocks and bush,
If you’re gonna play this course you’ll likely see your tush!
This is my description of the tough jewel called Eagle Canyon.
This beautiful course nestles in an old quarry just north west of Johannesburg and is in magnificent condition. The greens are tough. The fairways are tough and the tee’s are even tougher! But what a lovely course.
This course is full of surprises. The first is that, for the most part, you tee off on ledges high above the floor of this “quarry”, and aim for a green or fairway a good number of meters below your feet. Then you have quite a hectic ride in a golf cart, following well maintained golf paths, down into the quarry to go and play your second shot. Exciting stuff this as some of the hills that the golf carts have to go up and down resemble some of the scariest roller rides that I have ever been on!
But when you get down there, was it ever worth the ride. Manicured fairways and pool table greens await you. But don’t be fooled, the greens are not easy, and you may want to take a few “green reading” lessons before heading out to Eagle Canyon.
Oh, and don’t forget your water wings! This course has lots and lots of places where your ball will get wet. So take a supply of spares.
The facilities at this golf course are magnificent, and the staff friendly and helpful. The golf carts are in really good condition although this writer felt them to be a little underpowered. Ours struggled on some of the hills.
Would I go back to Eagle Canyon? Yes! But only once my game has improved a lot. This course is not for sissies!
